The Harry S. Truman Scholarship

IU Deadline: Monday, Nov. 2, 2009
National Deadline: Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010

Plan to attend an information meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh Street, in the Great Room.
Next year, The Harry S Truman Scholarship Foundation is expected to award 60-65 merit-based scholarships to students across the nation who will be "juniors" in 2009-10 and who plan to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government or public service. (See Eligibility section below for the Truman Foundation's definition of "juniors.") Each scholarship is worth $30,000 and the Foundation assists Truman Scholars "with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development."
To compete for the award, students must be nominated by their undergraduate institutions. The IU Truman Selection/Nomination Committee has set Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, as the campus deadline for students who wish to be considered for the 2010 competition. In the past, Truman scholars have come from such diverse fields as history, political science, international relations, journalism, economics, education, law, public administration, nonprofit management, public health, public policy, biology, environmental management, physical and social sciences, and technology policy.
The Truman Scholarship seeks to promote public service, which the foundation defines "as employment in government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, nongovernmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public-service oriented nonprofit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment." Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a graduate degree program funded by the Truman.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for consideration for the Truman Scholarship, a student must have a clear commitment to a career in public service, be in the upper quarter of his or her class, be a U.S. Citizen or National, and be nominated by his/her university. The student must also be a "junior-level student," which for the 2010 competition, we anticipate being defined as a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2010 and August 2011, or third-year student who expects to graduate during the 2009-10 academic year. (Residents of Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are eligible in their fourth year.) See http://www.truman.gov for official eligibility criteria.
Nomination and selection standards:
Because the Truman Scholarship attracts the interest of top candidates around the country, IU only nominates students with outstanding credentials. The foundation chooses scholars on the basis of their excellent academic performance and communication skills, potential for leadership, extensive records of public and community service, and commitment to careers in government or elsewhere in public service. (See the Truman Foundation's definition of "public service" above.) IU's nominating committee and the Truman Foundation selectors are looking for candidates who show promise of making a difference in the world through their public service.
IU Nomination Process:
The IU committee will select up to four nominees for the national 2010 Truman competition. To be considered by the IU committee, students should pick up application materials from Elaine Hehner in the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh Street, Room 210E, or should download the sample application available on the Truman Web site: http://www.truman.gov/candidates/candidates_show.htm?cat_id=777&doc_id=246903 and submit a completed application in hard copy to Mrs. Hehner by Monday, Nov. 2, 2009. The application must include the 500-word policy proposal on a significant issue related to the candidate's intended area of public service. Candidates must also arrange for one of the three letters of recommendation described in the Truman application materials to be submitted directly by the recommender to Mrs. Hehner by November 2. (For those candidates selected for nomination by IU, the additional letters will be required by a later date.) For additional information on the scholarship and guidance on the scholarship and the IU nomination process, contact IU's Truman faculty representative Judy Failer, jfailer@indiana.edu, or Elaine Hehner at ehehner@indiana.edu.

Scholars in Global Citizenship (SGCP) 2010 – Class in Spring, 2nd 8 Weeks, international field component in Seoul, South Korea May 12-26, 3 credit hours of SPEA-V 450
“Globalization” – It seems to be one of the newest catchwords in academia and in the professional world, but what does it really mean? Further, how does it relate to your field of study and future professional goals? For the 2010 spring semester, The School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) is offering a course that addresses these questions in the context of S. Korea. The course combines a second-eight week class with an international module in Seoul, S. Korea for a unique academic experience.
The international field component of this course allows you to explore your area of study using primary source materials, group meetings, lectures and interviews with experts in your field of focus. Because your experience is tailored to your interests, this course is approved for all SPEA majors. Visit the Scholars in Global Citizenship Webpage to learn more, and to apply for the program. The deadline for application is October 15, so please apply soon. Please contact program coordinator Stephanie Lewis with any questions at stelewis@indiana.edu.
IU at Oxford 2010 - July 2–August 1, 6 credit hours of SPEA-V 450

Join SPEA’s Dean John Graham and other renowned faculty to study a topic that is both fundamental and timely: the evaluation of health, safety, and environmental technologies and policies. Public demands for new technologies and policies are growing in both Europe and the United States, but the costs of these new initiatives are also a significant concern. Learn how decision makers on both sides of the Atlantic weigh the costs and benefits of new drugs and medical devices for patients, new safety technologies for consumer products, and new pollution-prevention devices for cars and factories. There are no course pre-requisites, classes will include both IU and University of Navarra students, and courses will be taught in English. Accommodations and meals will be provided.

Enjoy three weekday excursions to locations in the ancient and scenic region of Navarra Spain. Neuroscience Seminar Wednesday, Sept. 16th

The Program in Neuroscience
N650 Neuroscience Fall 2009 Colloquium Series Indiana University-Bloomington

is pleased to present a talk by

James L. Goodson, Ph.D.
Department of Biology
Indiana University-Bloomington

“Birds of a Feather:
Evolution of Sociality and the Social Brain”

Wednesday, September 16, 2009
4:00 p.m.
Psychology Building, Room 101

Abstract:

Species-typical group size (sociality) is a profoundly important aspect of behavior, but little research has focused on relevant neural mechanisms. This likely reflects limited tractability, since wide ranges of species-typical group sizes are difficult to accommodate in experimental settings and sociality is difficult to isolate for comparative study. For instance, rodent species that differ in sociality also tend to differ in other aspects of behavior and ecology that can influence neural and endocrine mechanisms, and even the socially-diverse songbirds offer few opportunities for highly controlled comparisons. The family Estrildidae (finches, waxbills and
munias) is a remarkable exception. Estrildids are all monogamous, exhibit long-term pair bonds, and show biparental care. However, even within very specific ecological niches, estrildids display an extraordinary diversity in sociality, ranging from territorial male-female pairs to groups of dozens or hundreds of colonially breeding pairs. Fortuitously, this family also includes the most socially tractable laboratory songbird, the highly gregarious zebra finch. In a series of experiments, we have exploited the tractability of the estrildid family to demonstrate that vasopressin- and oxytocin-like neuropeptide systems, which are best known for their pair-bonding and maternal functions in mammals, exert a potent influence on avian sociality and are targeted by selection in reliable ways as species-typical group sizes evolve.

Undergraduate Program: Debating REAL-WORLD ETHICAL Issues Tuesday, Sept. 15, 7:15-9:30 p.m.
Hutton Honors College (811 E. Seventh St.)

SIGN-UP REQUIRED (See below for info on how to sign up and note that participants must be able to attend for the full length of the program.)

Does the mother of a mentally handicapped teenager have the right to have her daughter sterilized because the youngster does not have the capacity to care for a child or the competency to make a fully informed reproductive decision on her own? Should the federal Bureau of Prisons be permitted to limit the religious books available to prisoners as a means to quell terrorist activities? Is the use of killer robots in armed combat justifiable, even if their designers cannot prevent them causing civilian casualties? With some U.S. states allowing gay marriage, what are the justifications for prohibiting polygamy, which some argue is a free exercise of religion?

These and other tough ethical questions come from current, real-world situations. Do you have answers? Can you persuade others that you are right and your arguments relevant? At this program, such ethical dilemmas will be explored, and debated, with the guidance of students from (and alumni of) IU?s National Champion Ethics Bowl Team. Colloquium Speaker - History & Philosophy of Science Indiana University

Robert Richards Morris Fishbien Professor of the History of Science and Medicine University of Chicago

"Darwin's Metaphysics of Mind and the Continuity of Nature."

Prior to publication of Darwin's Origin of Species, naturalists, whether they were Aristotelians, Cartesians, Kantians, or Associationists assumed a disjunction between man and the rest of the living world. Darwin and many other British naturalists in the Associationist tradition of David Hume and Jeremy Bentham did not believe an insurmountable intellectual barrier existed between animals and man-but humans did exhibit considerably larger intellectual capacity. In the moral sphere, however, virtually all naturalist assumed a deep divide between animal instinct and human moral behavior.
Darwin had to demonstrate two propositions for his theory to be
successful: that man's big brain could derive from modest animal antecedents and that moral behavior could arise out of animal antecedents. He solved both problems in a similar way, one that is now being rediscovered in contemporary science. Both Darwin's conclusion and modern evolutionary science have dramatic implications for any religious solution to his problems."

TO ALL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (PA) PROFESSION:

See below for information about upcoming visits to IUB by PA programs, and the upcoming PA info/group advising session. These events are appropriate for any pre-PA-er, freshman through senior (or alum), and for those who are simply exploring PA as a possibility.
Questions? Contact Eric Beckstrom, pre-PA-advisor, at ebeckstr@indiana.edu

(Pre-PA-ers, please join the Health Professions and Prelaw Center PA email list at www.hpplc.indiana.edu.)

Physician Assistant Group Advising / Information Session Tuesday, September 22, 2009 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Ballantine 244 You are invited to attend a Physician Assistant (PA) Group Advising / Information Session with Eric Beckstrom, pre-PA advisor.

While Indiana University itself does not offer a PA training program, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of IU students who wish to prepare for PA as they complete their undergraduate degree at IU. It is critical that you learn as much about PA admissions and the profession itself as early in your undergraduate program as possible.

This group advising session is intended for both those who are still contemplating PA as well as those who are sure PA is what they wish to pursue.

So whether you are a new freshman or a seasoned senior, and especially if you have never met with Eric in the Health Professions and Prelaw Center to discuss PA, you are welcome to sign up and attend. The session will include information and discussion pertaining to the profession itself, as well as the complex (but achievable!) process of researching the profession and PA education programs.

WHEN: Tuesday, September 22nd, 6:00pm - 7:00pm (Quiet late-comers are welcome!)
WHERE: Ballantine Hall 244
(No registration required.)

2009-10 IU Ethics Bowl Team

The Poynter Center Announces Openings for the 2009-10 IU Ethics Bowl Team.

Each year the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions at IU sponsors one team consisting of five undergraduate students to travel and compete in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. The competition begins with ten regional matches in the fall that feed the national competition, held in the early spring. The Central States regional, in which the IU team competes, will be on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Marian College in Indianapolis.

The Ethics Bowl competition is presented annually by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics as a method of involving students in deliberating about and seeking to resolve difficult cases and situations. The national competition, which draws together the top 32 teams from the regional rounds, will be held on March 4, 2010 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in Cincinnati, Ohio. IU won the national competition last year and in 2004.

At the national competition, the 32 participating teams compete in three rounds in the morning. The teams are given thirteen complex ethical and policy cases to study in advance of the competition, though they are not told what questions they will be asked about any case. For each match, one team is required to present a view on a case and then respond to questions from the opposing team and judges. Then the roles are reversed, and the opposing team presents an argument surrounding a different case, after which they respond to questions. Teams are evaluated at the end of each match for the quality of their arguments, responses, and counter-responses. The top eight teams advance to the quarterfinals, which are held in the evening.

Interested students should send their name, year, major (or possible major), along with a statement of interest by e-mail, to:

Prof. Richard Miller (miller3@indiana.edu) Director, Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions IUB

Please reference Ethics Bowl in the subject line.

Applications will be reviewed starting on September 21, 2009. Students should include information about their coursework and background in ethics, along with any questions about the Ethics Bowl team that they may have. Team members meet twice a week from around late September until the November regional event. If they are successful in being selected to participate in the national competition, they will again meet twice a week from the time second semester starts until the March 4 event.

See the web site, http://poynter.indiana.edu/ethicsbowl.shtml for more information about the event and about previous teams.
