Google 2010 Internship Program

Google is expanding its summer intern program, and is currently
looking for really talented students to join! Google has
openings in the many areas of Computer Science and Engineering that enable the company to continue rapid advances in an increasingly diverse domain of products and services. Openings are in both our engineering and research teams, but, as you may know, Google tends to mix research and engineering.

According to Alfred Spector, Vice President, Research & Special Initiatives (including, Intern Programs), the Google internship program has been a tremendously beneficial experience for almost every intern, and Google itself also benefits greatly: Papers have been written, new product features launched, etc. Needless to say, the Intern Program devotes much attention to finding useful areas and projects that are tractable in a summer's work. The interns find their fellow Googlers and the Google culture a stimulating experience.

The Google Intern Program will do its best to have an expedited selection process for top students interested in the summer internship. If you are interested in this opportunity please send your resume to Alex Treister at atreister@google.com. Again, Google is very proud of its intern program, and feels that this program offers a great opportunity to expand scientific skills, address real-world problems, and do so with state of the art infrastructure. It's very intense and a lot of fun.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

“Transgender Day of Remembrance” services in Bloomington, Indiana, are being hosted by the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (NOGLSTP) at Indiana University and IU’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Student Support Services (GLBTSSS). This is the eleventh annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). This day (November 17) is being set aside to memorialize those people who have died due to violence and hate crimes inflicted upon them by others who took exception to their gender expression. The students and organizers would like to draw the attention of IU administrators and local officials to the social environment that transgender people face every day—an environment of oppression similar to that faced by African-Americans in the Jim Crow era— including lynching.

All day November 16 and 17 (Monday and Tuesday) we plan to have a graveyard of the 119 transgender-based murder victims’ names from the past year in the grass on the east side of Dunn Meadow near the IMU steps and signs around Dunn Meadow listing the names of the 245 known dead from the past ten years with the city, date and cause of death for each.

The main event is scheduled to begin in the Fine Arts Auditorium (FA 015) at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, November 17, where five leaders will speak for about 45 minutes total. The scheduled speakers are:
1. Dr. Aren Aizura, Visiting Lecturer of Gender Studies, Indiana University
2. Beverly Calender-Anderson, Safe and Civil City Director, City of Bloomington
3. Chris Kase, President, National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals at Indiana University (http://www.noglstp.net/iu/chris-kase-bio)
4. Dr. Karen Hanson, Provost and Executive Vice President, Indiana University Bloomington (http://www.iub.edu/provost/bio.shtml)
5. Kay Johnson, National Board Member, National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (http://www.noglstp.net/iu/kay-johnson-bio)

After the speakers on Tuesday, we plan to have a funeral procession with pall bearers and a casket leave the Fine Arts Building to arrive at the tombstone plots around 7:00 pm on November 17 where we will conclude by reading each of the 119 names. Everyone is welcome at all of our TDOR events.

The day before, on Monday, November 16, we plan to show a movie, Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria, in the Fine Arts auditorium (FA 015) at 7:00 pm. This award winning PBS documentary (about a 1966 riot in San Francisco where a group of transgender women fought back for the first time in history against everyday police harassment) was co-produced and narrated by Dr. Susan Stryker, Associate Professor in Gender Studies at Indiana University, who will provide a statement at our presentation.

We hope you attend these events and that you encourage your friends and colleagues to attend as well. It is important to remember that this day is not only a day for action, but also a day for education and for people who do not identify as transgender to become an ally and stand up for the rights of individuals who have been the victim of harassment, bullying and name calling because of their gender identity and/or gender expression. Your visible support helps send a message denouncing violence, hate-crimes and murder of transgenders. We expect this event to be of great value in raising the awareness of University officials and community members to help improve the climate for transgenders (and all queer persons) in Bloomington.

You can learn more about Transgender Day of Remembrance by visiting http://www.transgenderdor.org/ .

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship

IU Deadline: Monday, Nov. 2, 2009
National Deadline: Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010

Plan to attend an information meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh Street, in the Great Room.
Next year, The Harry S Truman Scholarship Foundation is expected to award 60-65 merit-based scholarships to students across the nation who will be "juniors" in 2009-10 and who plan to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government or public service. (See Eligibility section below for the Truman Foundation's definition of "juniors.") Each scholarship is worth $30,000 and the Foundation assists Truman Scholars "with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development."
To compete for the award, students must be nominated by their undergraduate institutions. The IU Truman Selection/Nomination Committee has set Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, as the campus deadline for students who wish to be considered for the 2010 competition. In the past, Truman scholars have come from such diverse fields as history, political science, international relations, journalism, economics, education, law, public administration, nonprofit management, public health, public policy, biology, environmental management, physical and social sciences, and technology policy.
The Truman Scholarship seeks to promote public service, which the foundation defines "as employment in government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, nongovernmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public-service oriented nonprofit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment." Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a graduate degree program funded by the Truman.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for consideration for the Truman Scholarship, a student must have a clear commitment to a career in public service, be in the upper quarter of his or her class, be a U.S. Citizen or National, and be nominated by his/her university. The student must also be a "junior-level student," which for the 2010 competition, we anticipate being defined as a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2010 and August 2011, or third-year student who expects to graduate during the 2009-10 academic year. (Residents of Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are eligible in their fourth year.) See http://www.truman.gov for official eligibility criteria.
Nomination and selection standards:
Because the Truman Scholarship attracts the interest of top candidates around the country, IU only nominates students with outstanding credentials. The foundation chooses scholars on the basis of their excellent academic performance and communication skills, potential for leadership, extensive records of public and community service, and commitment to careers in government or elsewhere in public service. (See the Truman Foundation's definition of "public service" above.) IU's nominating committee and the Truman Foundation selectors are looking for candidates who show promise of making a difference in the world through their public service.
IU Nomination Process:
The IU committee will select up to four nominees for the national 2010 Truman competition. To be considered by the IU committee, students should pick up application materials from Elaine Hehner in the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh Street, Room 210E, or should download the sample application available on the Truman Web site: http://www.truman.gov/candidates/candidates_show.htm?cat_id=777&doc_id=246903 and submit a completed application in hard copy to Mrs. Hehner by Monday, Nov. 2, 2009. The application must include the 500-word policy proposal on a significant issue related to the candidate's intended area of public service. Candidates must also arrange for one of the three letters of recommendation described in the Truman application materials to be submitted directly by the recommender to Mrs. Hehner by November 2. (For those candidates selected for nomination by IU, the additional letters will be required by a later date.) For additional information on the scholarship and guidance on the scholarship and the IU nomination process, contact IU's Truman faculty representative Judy Failer, jfailer@indiana.edu, or Elaine Hehner at ehehner@indiana.edu.

Join SPEA’s Dean John Graham and other renowned faculty to study a topic that is both fundamental and timely: the evaluation of health, safety, and environmental technologies and policies. There are no course pre-requisites, classes will include both IU and University of Navarra students, and courses will be taught in English. Accommodations and meals will be provided.

Enjoy three weekday excursions to locations in the ancient and scenic region of Navarra Spain. Plans are also in development for optional excursions, such as field trips to restaurants, museums, plazas, shops, markets, Roman ruins, Medieval buildings, palaces, cathedrals, and other sites of interest. Student travel and exploration are encouraged. Information will be provided for tours to Barcelona and Madrid, and for the famous Festival of San Fermin. Please contact Liz Peck at epeck@indiana.edu for questions. Information will be available soon on the SPEA website.
