Summer Internship: University of Delaware Child's Play Lab

The Child’s Play, Learning and Development Lab, under the direction of Dr. Roberta Golinkoff at the University of Delaware, invites undergraduate students and graduating seniors to apply for an unpaid summer internship! Our laboratory, funded by federal grants, focuses on how children acquire language, develop early mathematical and spatial concepts, and learn through play. 

Interns will learn the practical applications of research methods, participant recruitment, data collection, data coding, and data entry. Additionally, we will hold weekly lab meetings where we discuss cutting-edge research in developmental cognition. 


This is an ideal way to gain research experience for students thinking of going on in a variety of fields such as psychology, speech pathology, and medicine. While there are no specific requirements, you must like children and be an eager learner and responsible individual!

Lab Manager Position: Yale Computation and Development Lab

The Computation and Development Lab at Yale, directed by Dr. Julian Jara-Ettinger, is seeking a full-time lab manager to begin in Summer 2017. The lab uses developmental, cross-cultural, and computational approaches to study higher-level cognition (additional information: http://www.compdevlab.com).

This position is ideal for those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in psychology or cognitive science. The lab manager will participate in all aspects of the research process and have opportunities to work on a variety of exciting research projects. The ideal candidate will make intellectual contributions to the lab's research, which may result in opportunities to co-author manuscripts, and will benefit from the vibrant and collaborative scientific community at Yale.

Primary responsibilities include establishing and maintaining partnerships with local schools and museums; recruiting participants; acquiring behavioral data; managing and analyzing data; working with children and their parents in a research setting; assisting in experimental paradigm development; and managing the lab and performing administrative duties (e.g., assisting with IRB protocols and grants).

Requirements include experience testing human participants, ability to perform data analysis using statistical software (R/MATLAB/Python), and excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and time management skills. Competitive candidates will have prior research experience with both children and adults. Ability to provide own transportation to data collection sites near New Haven and a 2-year commitment are preferred.

Paid Summer Research Internship: Child Development Lab, College of Staten Island

The Child Development Lab at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, directed by Dr. Sarah Berger, is seeking undergraduate research assistants for PAID NSF-funded internships for Summer 2017.
Students will work on a program of research investigating the role of sleep in infants’ locomotor problem-solving and learn about a variety of projects investigating the interaction between cognitive and motor development in infancy and early childhood.

Laboratory Coordinator Position—Emory University

The Memory at Emory laboratory in the Department of Psychology, Emory University (http://Scholarblogs.emory.edu/bauerlab/), directed by Dr. Patricia Bauer, seeks a full-time laboratory coordinator.

The laboratory coordinator will assist with studies of the development of episodic and semantic memory, in preschool to school-age children, and young adults. The laboratory makes use of behavioral measures, eye tracking, and event-related potential (ERP) methods. Duties include contributing to study design, creating experimental stimuli, testing participants, managing data, and assisting with data analysis. There also are administrative duties including assisting with participant recruitment and training and supervising undergraduate research assistants. Coordinators also have the opportunity to attend and present the work of the laboratory at scientific conferences and to contribute to preparation of scientific publications.

The position is ideally suited to a recent college graduate who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology, cognitive science, linguistics, neuroscience, or a related field and who is (a) looking for additional research experience before going on to graduate school or (b) seeking a more permanent employment opportunity. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, an ability to work independently, and an interest in development are a must. The ideal candidate will have either (a) computer programming experience, preferably using R, Python, or Matlab; or (b) a strong desire to develop programming skills. The position will entail the use of both R and Excel to process and analyze large data sets. In addition, the applicant should be comfortable interacting with children of all ages, with undergraduate students, and with parents and community members. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Summer Research Internship for Underrepresented Students in Psychology at Duke University

The Wilbourn Infant Lab at Duke University is excited to announce the third year of our summer research program for underrepresented students in Psychology. 
  
We are offering three paid summer internships for undergraduates interested in research in Developmental Psychology. Interns will gain hands-on experience conducting research with infants, children, and adults. We are seeking highly motivated undergraduates who are interested in attending graduate school in Psychology. Interns will receive a $1,500 stipend, free on-campus housing, travel reimbursement to/from the program, and funds to travel to a conference to present research completed during the program. 
     
Applicants must be US citizens and from one of these underrepresented or minority groups: First generation college student, Black/African-American, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian, Native Pacific Islander, LGBTQ, Asian/Asian American, current/eligible recipient of need-based financial aid, or from colleges/universities with limited research opportunities.

Clinical Research Assistant Position at McLean Hospital

Seeking a highly motivated college graduate to provide support for an NIH-funded clinical trial investigating treatment for co-occurring anxiety disorders and opioid use disorder under the direction of R. Kathryn McHugh, PhD. 

The position will be based at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. 

Specific responsibilities include: participant recruitment, follow-up, and assessment; maintaining and updating data generated by the study; performing literature searches; conducting statistical analysis; contributing to the writing of manuscripts and grant applications; and administrative tasks. Publication and presentation opportunities will be available. 

This position offers an excellent opportunity for graduating seniors looking for clinical research experience before applying to graduate school in psychology (particularly clinical and counseling programs), the social sciences, or medical school.

Brainhack Global Bloomington

The Intelligent Systems Engineering department in the School of Informatics and Computing is partnering with the IU Imaging Research Facility to host Brainhack Global Bloomington March 2-4 at the Cyberinfrastructure Building at IU Bloomington.

Brainhack Global is a conference that brings together researchers from around the world and a variety of disciplines to work together on innovative projects related to neuroscience. The events invite researchers to participate in open collaboration. This year, 40 sites in 16 countries are hosting local events during the conference.

Participants at the IU Bloomington gathering will code in groups on topics including brain-computer interfaces, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), PET (positron emission therapy), EEG (electroencephalogram) and MEG (Magnetoencephalography), network science, machine learning, and statistical analysis.

Ignite speakers include: IU’s Olaf Sporns (Computational Challenges and Opportunities in Network Neuroscience), Matthew Glasser (The Human Connectome Project’s Multi-modal Cortical Parcellation), Hamza Farooq (Microstructure Imaging of Complex White Matter Architecture from Diffusion MRI), Kendrick Kay (Software tools motivated by analysis of fMRI data), and Andy Saykin (Searching for multiple needles in multiple haystacks: Multimodality imaging and –omics studies of Alzheimer’s disease).

The event is open to any college-age student or faculty who is interested.

The event is coordinated by Assistant Professor of ISE Eleftherios Garyfallidis, Associate Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences Sharlene Newman, Assistant Professor of Statistics Amanda Meija, and Assistant Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences Franco Pestilli.

“This is the first time that Brainhack Global has taken place in Bloomington, and we are excited and honored that IU Bloomington is one of the hosting sites,” Garyfallidis says. “Brainhack Global is such a unique event because it provides researchers from around the globe the opportunity to actively and collectively participate in critical areas of study. Lab Manager / Research Assistant at Penn State's Center for Language Science

The Center for Language Science (CLS) at Penn State seeks candidates for the position of Lab Manager/Research Assistant.  

The CLS (http://cls.psu.edu/) is an interdisciplinary group of linguists, psycholinguists, applied linguists, speech-language pathologists, speech scientists, and cognitive neuroscientists who share an interest in language acquisition and bilingualism.  CLS researchers employ a variety of methods including behavioral measures, eye tracking, electrophysiological methods (EEG/ERP), and fMRI.  

Responsibilities for this position include assisting with a wide variety of CLS research projects, managing the laboratory operations (including equipment maintenance and participant scheduling), and providing support for weekly meetings and other CLS events.  Knowledge of E-prime, SPSS, and MATLAB is desirable, as is experience with eye tracking and EEG/ERP methods.  Training and experience with at least one technical method (eye tracking, EEG/ERP, speech analysis in Praat, etc.) is required.  Additional training will be provided for technical methods, and also for the conduct of research with human participants.  

Candidates should have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects, and a strong curiosity and interest in language science research and methods. Knowledge of and experience working with languages other than English is also desirable but not required.  This position is ideal for someone who has completed undergraduate studies in a language science related field and wishes to gain additional laboratory experience before applying for graduate school. 

Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.  The successful candidate will have had laboratory experience as an undergraduate, preferably with both behavioral and cognitive neuroscience methods.

Internship Opportunity in North Suburban Chicagoland


Full-time Research Assistant Position at the University of Maryland, Neurocognitive Development Lab

Dr. Tracy Riggins and the Neurocognitive Development Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland College Park is seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) Research Assistant beginning approximately May 15, 2017.  The focus of the research project is the development of memory in early childhood using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and cognitive electrophysiology (EEG/ERPs). Responsibilities include: (1) conducting experiments with young children and adults (including: recruiting, scheduling, and data collection); (2) preprocessing and analyzing data; (3) training and supervising undergraduate research assistants; (4) performing general administrative duties, including data management, lab web pages and participant recruiting systems; (5) programming scientific experiments and developing experimental stimuli, (6) assisting with IRB protocol creation and compliance, (7) conducting library searches and literature reviews to assist in manuscript preparation; and (8) providing general support for the PI and other researchers in the laboratory including, but not limited to, purchasing and maintaining lab equipment.

Qualifications: Recommended background and skills include: a bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field (e.g., psychology or neuroscience); previous research experience with human participants (preferably with children and/or using fMRI or EEG); the ability to work independently; keen attention to detail; and the ability to interact warmly and professionally with parents and children. Strong computational, organizational, managerial, problem-solving, and analytic skills are essential.

About SILC

  • The Science-based Innovation in Learning Center (SILC) is an innovative new cross-disciplinary center spanning the University of California system. The Center will provide services, training, advocacy, and research to help tackle issues associated with education and health disparity, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented populations. The ultimate goal is to provide the best educational and health outcomes for all children, regardless of their background. An initial focus is on early identification and intervention for English language learners (ELLs) at risk for learning challenges

  • The central office of SILC is hosted at brainLENS (brainLENS.org<http://brainlens.org/>) at the University of California, San Francisco at the main Parnassus Campus. brainLENS is a developmental cognitive neuroscience laboratory that uses neuroimaging and interdisciplinary research methods to examine learning processes, including the acquisition of skills, such as reading, and factors that impact learning, such as socio-emotional processing.

Job Description & Responsibilities

We are seeking a SILC Coordinator to take on the challenge of developing our new center and its programs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating program content (e.g. websites, flyers, newsletters, social media postings) and identifying and managing distribution channels
  • Planning and executing conferences, webinars, and professional development workshops related to project goals
  • Maintain project budget and manage reimbursements, purchases and expenses
  • Coordinating research pilot studies and supporting data analysis
  • Facilitating communication between team members and managing projects (e.g. via team meetings, task lists, schedules, etc.)
  • Contribute to knowledge base, grant/research proposals, and publications/presentations by conducting literature reviews and writing
  • Regular participation in SILC activities (e.g, talks, lab meetings, outreach events, etc.), including evening and weekend activities and travel to other UC campuses or collaborating sites

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Demonstrated project management ability and organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • High proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and collaborative tools (e.g. Asana, Dropbox, Google Docs)
  • Capacity for rapidly learning new skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience coordinating or managing large-scale research projects (e.g. NIH, IES or NSF research/center grants)
  • Prior experience in research lab settings

Other Information

  • Full-time position (40 hrs/week)
  • Preference given to candidates who can start March/April 2017
  • The selected candidate will work onsite at UCSF in San Francisco, CA
