TEDMED has just announced a $2 million scholarship program to provide financial support to qualified applicants for its upcoming TEDMED 2012 conference. The event will be held April 10-13 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
We are delighted to inform you that the AAU has secured at least one (and possibly two) guaranteed half-scholarships for each of our member institutions. We encourage interested students, staff, faculty members, as well as other innovators and leaders from our member institutions to apply immediately.
The attached brochure and Q&A tells you everything you need to know about the scholarships available, target recipients and the application process. If your institution is hosting the TEDMEDLive simulcast, preference will be given to two individuals (students, staff and/or faculty) from your institution. Preference also will be given to veterans and active duty military personnel.
Please note that scholarship funding is intended to specifically subsidize all or part of the conference fee of $4,950. Travel, lodging, and personal expenses remain the responsibility of the recipient. Both half and full scholarships are available, although there will be more half scholarships granted than full to enable more people to attend the event.

Lab Manager Position
The Social Cognitive Development Lab at Yale, under the direction of Kristina Olson, is looking to hire a lab manager beginning in late May or early June. The lab’s research sits at the intersection of developmental and social psychology, focusing on topics such as the emergence and development of social attitudes (e.g., race, gender, social class), prosocial behavior, morality, and ownership. Duties include managing and organizing a busy lab including graduate students, undergraduate research assistants, and summer and high school interns. The lab manager assists in the training of all new lab members, recruits and runs or supervises the running of more than a thousand (mostly child) participants each year in the lab, at schools and after-school programs in the New Haven area, as well as other parts of the country (and potentially in other countries), purchases and maintains lab equipment, conducts library searches, oversees lab organization and management, assists the PI with administrative tasks, and helps with data entry.
An ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in psychology or cognitive science, considerable experience with children, at least some training in social and/or developmental psychology, working knowledge of Excel and SPSS, and access to a car to drive to research sites. Strong multi-tasking, leadership, and organizational skills are necessary. A minimum 1 year commitment is necessary, though 2 years is more desirable.

The DSCN lab investigates the neural and cognitive bases of social-cognitive and communicative development (e.g., joint attention, theory of mind) in typical individuals and individuals with autism. The methods used include functional and structural MRI as well as behavioral measures with adults and children (infancy through adolescence). This is an excellent position for anyone who would like to pursue graduate work in developmental, cognitive, and/or clinical neuroscience. We encourage applicants with a background in psychology, cognitive science, computer science, engineering, or related fields to apply.
Responsibilities will include data collection and analyses of MRI and behavioral studies with infants, children and adults, development and maintenance of lab imaging analysis and stimulus presentation scripts, and scheduling study participants. Additionally, the lab manager will supervise undergraduate research assistants, manage IRB protocols, and be responsible for general lab upkeep. The position will involve MRI operator training on the new 3T Siemens scanner on UMD campus. There may be opportunities for presenting data at conferences and co-authoring publications.
Experience with matlab (and other programming languages), neuroimaging analysis software (e.g., AFNI, SPM, FSL, Freesurfer), and/or linux is preferred. Applicants must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills and must enjoy working with children.
Salary will be competitive commensurate with experience and includes health benefits. The start date is flexible between mid-May and July. This is a 1-2 year position.

Lab Coordinator Position at Emory University
The Spatial Cognition Laboratory headed by Stella Lourenco at Emory University is accepting applications for a full-time lab coordinator beginning June-July 2012. The lab conducts research on space and related concepts. On-going experiments are concerned with addressing questions on spatial development and individual differences, number representation and early math achievement, as well as individual differences in how people represent near (or “personal”) space. These experiments cut across a variety of age groups, including infants, preschoolers, and college students.

The Language and Development Lab at UCSD, supervised by Dr. David Barner, is currently recruiting candidates for a full time research position. The lab conducts research on language acquisition, conceptual development, and cross-cultural differences in each area (e.g., in Japan, Taiwan, India, Eastern Europe, Russia, etc.). Full Time Research Assistant for Project on Russian and / or FarsiDuties include translating experimental materials from English into another language, recruiting adult subjects, testing their understanding of language and associated concepts, organizing and entering experimental data, and managing experimental content on the web. No technical skills or preparatory core work are required as all such skills will be taught by supervisors.Requirements: Ability to speak, read, and write English and either Farsi or Russian at a native level of fluency. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills for interacting with participants, lab members, departmental staff. Experience with the following software: Microsoft, Excel, and Word.

The Barnard Cognitive Development Center at Barnard College, Columbia University is seeking a confident, motivated, and creative individual to work as a full-time lab coordinator. This position is ideal for a recent college graduate hoping to go on to graduate work in psychology.
The lab coordinator will work in a highly collaborative environment alongside Dr. Koleen McCrink. BCDC is a busy, active environment, with many research projects running concurrently in the lab, as well as throughout NYC at elementary schools, day cares, and children’s museums. Our research focuses on the development of mathematical and spatial knowledge from infancy (5 months) to early childhood (8 years).
The position begins in early summer of 2012, and is for one year.
Requirements:
As the public face of the lab, the lab coordinator must be at ease recruiting participants in and around the Morningside Heights neighborhood and interfacing with the parents and families who participate in our studies. The coordinator must also be comfortable interacting with babies and young children. Additionally, the coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the undergraduate staff, requiring a balance of strong managerial capability alongside the ability to foster a productive, fun environment.
The lab coordinator must be highly organized and attentive to detail, as s/he will be responsible for the management of all laboratory finances, participant recruitment and community outreach, IRB management, and general laboratory upkeep, including purchasing of supplies, technological maintenance, etc. Additionally, the lab coordinator should be computer-proficient, particularly on Macs, and should also be comfortable with SPSS software.
The ideal applicant possesses all of the above qualities, will have graduated with a degree in psychology, has experience working with children in a research environment, plans on continuing to graduate school in the field, and is looking for an exciting, challenging work environment.

Research Assistant opportunity at Georgetown's Cognitive Neuropsychology Lab
Research Assistant opportunity at Georgetown University's Cognitive Neuropsychology LabThe Cognitive Neuropsychology Lab within Georgetown University’s Center for Aphasia Research and Rehabilitation, directed by Rhonda Friedman, Ph.D., is seeking a full-time research assistant to support two ongoing studies examining the decline of word-finding abilities in adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, and Primary Progressive Aphasia. Research in our lab examines language and learning/memory function and dysfunction in people with stroke, head injury, and dementia. Projects include behavioral, fMRI, eye tracking, and ERP studies, and development of cognitive treatments for acquired language disorders.Duties include: preparing stimulus materials according to research protocols; data organization, input, and maintenance; scoring language and neuropsychological assessment tests; coordination and scheduling of participants; recruitment and testing of normal control subjects; and data processing and analysis, including coding of subjects’ errors, as directed by senior lab members. The research assistant will also provide support to the Principle Investigator and other lab members, including ordering supplies and equipment, processing subject payments, maintenance and updating of the lab’s library, data back-up, and other minor duties as assigned. The successful research assistant will be self-initiated, motivated, and have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Second 8 Weeks Course: 2012 and the Maya

This course explores the western fascination with “the Maya,” specifically focusing on New Age spiritual appropriations of the Maya and New Age prophesies of a Maya doomsday or apocalypse. Where do these ideas of a Maya prophesy of the end of the world come from? Who believes in this and why? If the end of the world is upon us, why take this course? Why go to school? But, then, if the world is ending, why not?!! Why not: take out a loan, buy a yacht or a pyramid, forfeit on your loans, go hog wild doing all those things you dreamed of but never thought you would do? What does all of this have to do with ethics, belief, morality, and self?
This course brings together several approaches and perspectives in order to better understand our own place in the world today. Participants should note that this course is not an archaeology course or a course on Maya archaeology or Mesoamerican civilization. This is an ethnography course that puts into historical and anthropological perspectives the 2012 phenomena. Briefly, this is the idea that according to New Age interpretations of Anthropological interpretations of Maya interpretations of calendrical interpretations of astronomical phenomena, the world is going to end on the day December 24, in the year of the current Christian calendar two thousand and twelve years “After Death” of Jesus Christ.
One section of the course explores the emergence of new age spiritualism out of heterodox Christianities and medical-health cults in the USA, for example, mesmerism, hydrotherapy, and massage. In this section we learn about new agers’ religious practices, rituals, and beliefs in the USA and in Mexico. We read New Age religious texts by José Argüelles, Hunbatz Men, and Major Jenkins, among others. A second section provides students with basic knowledge about Maya beliefs and practices related to calendars, astronomy, notions of history and prophesy, and health-healing. We read selections from colonial period Maya books such as the Chilam Balam and the Popol Vuh as well as contemporary ethnographies of Maya culture. A third brief section uses comparative sources from throughout the Americas to learn how the Indian has been exoticized by European-culture descendants as a figure of redemption and salvation. We read ethnographies about shamanic use of hallucinogenic drugs for spiritual healing. We will also have recourse to numerous films.

Summer internship at Johns Hopkins
Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Child Development’s annual Summer Internship Program. Summer interns will receive close mentorship by faculty, post docs, and graduate students, and learn all aspects of cognitive development research. Under the direction of Drs. Lisa Feigenson and Justin Halberda, the Lab is currently investigating a range of issues including memory development, numerical abilities, logical reasoning, and language acquisition, in populations including young infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults.
Summer interns participate fully in all aspects of research, including recruiting participants, testing infants and children in behavioral tasks, coding children’s testing sessions, analyzing data, and interpreting results. Interns also participate in guided readings of developmental literature, and attend laboratory meetings in which we discuss ongoing projects or current issues in the field of cognitive development. Students will work primarily in the Psychological & Brain Sciences building of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland, and may also work at our testing site at the Maryland Science Center at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
2012 will be the 8th year of our annual summer program, which has been enormously successful in instilling students with a love of basic research, preparing them for graduate study, and forming friendships that last well beyond the duration of the program.
Summer interns have daily contact with children and their parents, and as such must be mature, articulate, and comfortable communicating with others. Successful candidates will also be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for the research being conducted, a strong work ethic, and an excellent academic record. Desirable background experience includes coursework in developmental and experimental psychology, basic computer skills, an ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment, and some previous research experience.
The 2012 Program will begin on Tuesday, May 29 and will end on Tuesday, July 31, and will be full-time (roughly 9AM to 5PM). Interns will receive either course credit or a stipend (range: $1000 -$1500).

Part time lab manager position open
Part-time research assistant/lab manager
We are searching for a part-time laboratory manager. The laboratory investigates the modulation of auditory processing by serotonin in mice.
The successful applicant should have previous laboratory experience, ideally in neuroscience. Students already possessing an undergraduate degree are welcome applicants.
Initial duties will include ordering supplies, maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, animal care, laboratory record keeping, and preparation of solutions. Additional duties may include histology, microscopy, data analysis, or electrophysiology. Experience in one or more of these techniques and basic electronic and/or computer skills are desirable, but training will be provided.

Chance to Make a Difference in a Child's Life
Hello,
My name is Monte Simonton and I run the after school program at Middle Way House The Rise. We serve children between the ages of 3-19 years old who have come from domestic violence, homeless, and poverty situations. We have several volunteer options and a service learning course that we need more volunteers for. Each of them are described below.
L100: *** We still have 8 spots left.
Every year we collaborate with a service learning course (CLLC-L100, 20208) to provide the children with a Spring Break Camp. The class meets Feb 29th, March 7th, and March 21st from 6:00-8:30 p.m. and includes meeting the week of Spring Break from 8:30-5 p.m. The first two classes the students will get a foundation on the effects of domestic violence on children. They will learn about Middle Way House and about what we will doing with the children over spring break. During spring break we will spend Mon-Fri 8:30-5 with the children. We will go to the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis, the Exotic Feline Rescue Center,The Indianapolis Zoo, and Wonder Lab. We will go to a Chemistry Magic show, go swimming, and have live animals brought in by the Humane Society for some educational programs and two animal rescue programs. It is a really fun week that allows students to make a difference in a child’s life over Spring Break.
Mentoring:
We currently need 25 men and 10 women to be mentors to the children in our program. We pair IU students with a child of the same gender for a year commitment as a mentor. The mentor must spend an average of 3 hours a week with the child, not counting winter, summer, or spring breaks. Some of our boys have been waiting close to a year to get mentors, because we have not had that many male applicants. We have a large number of female children who have recently moved and also need mentors. Mentoring is one of the easiest ways to make a difference in a child’s life. Just by hanging around them and incorporating them into your life, you can make a major difference in their lives. We ask that the mentor activities be done on the weekend. We tutor children between the ages of 4-18 with their homework. We do tutoring Mon-Fri from 5:30-7:00 p.m. We need help with tutoring children in all grades. We could also use help in developing assignments for children to do when they do not have homework that would increase their literacy and math levels. We are tutoring about 30 children a day and need more volunteers. We in particular need more tutors on Fridays. Please contact Monte Simonton at msimonto@hotmail.com for more information.

Hello everyone,
I often meet with students interested in first earning a non-nursing degree at IUB, and then going on to earn a second degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing elsewhere.
If you have students interested in learning more about the Nursing profession, feel free to direct them to http://hpplc.indiana.edu/ohp/ohp-n.shtml#explore. I've added a link which unearths an amazing list of resources on the Indiana Center for Nursing's new webpage (formerly Nursing2000inc.org). Shadowing of nurses can be difficult to arrange, so this list provides an additional way of researching the profession.

Research Assistantship at University of Maryland
The Child Development Lab at the University of Maryland is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to work on a federally funded project investigating the functions and development of the mirror neuron system. For more information about this project go to https://mirroringdevelopment.uchicago.edu/project_1/
Responsibilities include fine-grained behavioral coding of motor activity in infants, adults, and non-human primates, processing of high density EEG data, processing of eyetracking data, and data acquisition. A Bachelor's degree and experience working in a lab environment required. Experience with any of the responsibilities listed above preferred. Working knowledge of Eprime, Matlab and/or EEGlab preferred, but not required. Attention to detail and a commitment to the accuracy and completeness of data are essential.
The position is for two years with a start date preferably in June 2012.

Responsibilities include fine-grained behavioral coding of motor activity in infants, adults, and non-human primates, processing of high density EEG data, processing of eyetracking data, and data acquisition. A Bachelor's degree and experience working in a lab environment required. Experience with any of the responsibilities listed above preferred. Working knowledge of Eprime, Matlab and/or EEGlab preferred, but not required. Attention to detail and a commitment to the accuracy and completeness of data are essential.
The position is for two years with a start date preferably in June 2012.
