The Moth storytelling program is coming to IU Bloomington!

The Moth storytelling program is coming to IU Bloomington! 

Students from all over campus are welcome to sign up for a two-day storytelling workshop followed by a public StorySLAM. 

The free workshop will be presented by “The Moth Radio Hour” team and will introduce students to the Seven Principles of Moth Storytelling, The Moth Story Map, and elements of live performance. Students will work in small groups and one-on-one with instructors, learning to shape their personal experiences into well-crafted stories. The StorySLAM will take place on the third evening. Participants can test out their new storytelling skills by throwing their names in the hat to tell a true, five-minute story on the theme of CHOICES. All events are free, but space is limited.

TO APPLY:

Email your name, major, and a brief story (500 words or less) on the theme of CHOICES to iubmoth@indiana.edu.

Please specify your preference for Group A or Group B.

Space for this workshop is very limited, so please only sign up if you can and will attend both days.

Applications will not be accepted without a story submission to the above email!

Some GUIDELINES for the stories:

* Stories should be TRUE, FIRST PERSON narratives.

* While we appreciate good writing, this isn’t an essay contest! We want to work with students who feel passionately about their material and are excited to craft a story they can tell live at The Moth.

 * Think big or think small – be funny or serious - just be sincere about your life and the moment you want to share. Tell us what pressures you faced, and what you felt was significant about your choice.

Students will be contacted on Monday, October 19 to confirm their space in the workshop.

Law Day – October 8th

Thursday, October 8, is LAW DAY at IUB.  With over 110 schools coming, it will be the largest Law Fair in the country.  We offer a rare opportunity that most other college students simply do not have.  Get an edge on your competition.  Questions?  Contact HPPLC at hpplc@indiana.edu.  [For a list of schools that have registered so far, click here.]

All 3 events below are great for all IU students, including freshmen and sophomores.  But if you are a current applicant or a junior, you should consider attendance at both events mandatory! 

Please at least drop by and register.  Our turnout is always first in the Big Ten, typically triple that of #2.  Help us stay #1!!  Casual attire is fine.  More formal attire is also fine.

1.  Panel Discussion, Q & A, 9:00 - 10:45 AM (quiet latecomers welcome) in the Frangipani Room - IMU.  Three Law School Deans will reveal the inner secrets of the admissions process:  “WHAT I REALLY LIKE TO SEE IN A LAW SCHOOL APPLICATION!”  These experts will provide invaluable insider information! 

2.  Law School Fair, 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM in Alumni Hall – IMU.

Representatives from 110 (so far) law schools will be here to recruit YOU!  Ask questions about their programs, admission requirements, and your specific strengths (and weaknesses).  Pick up material, information, and application FEE WAIVERS.  Making a good impression can be helpful in the admissions process.  Don’t know what to ask?  Consider these Questions to Ask Law Schools.  Not ready to ask yet?  No problem—you can learn quite a bit by eavesdropping.

3.  For the first time at IU, we will host a Mock Admissions Committee Meeting, 3:15 to 5:00 PM in the Dogwood Room – IMU.  Three actual admission officials from 3 different law schools will openly discuss files of actual applicants!  Discover under what conditions factors BEYOND the numbers help (or not):  e.g., lower LSAT but impressive internships; above average numbers but no activities, low GPA due only to bad freshman year, etc., etc.).  It will reveal solid information that will help you maximize your strengths and finesse your weakness to put together the most powerful application package possible.

Managing The Stress Of Being A Prehealth Student

If you feel stressed out about the process of being admitted to health professions programs, you are not alone! Preprofessionals often worry about being competitive for admission, and often unfairly compare themselves to the progress they think their peers perusing similar goals are making.

In this session, co-presented by the Health Professions and Prelaw Center and IU Counseling and Psychological Services, we present concrete stress-reducing self-care techniques:
--constructive ways to respond to the pressures of being a very busy preprofessional student, who must also be academically successful beyond what many of your peers must achieve
--specific ways to manage the sense of competition you might feel in relation to peers applying to the same professional programs as yourself
--specific ways to cope with the stress that often comes with changing (or even thinking about changing) your career path - changes which are sometimes unexpected or unwanted (e.g., when students think they may not be competitive for admission, or find themselves unanchored when they feel they've been on the "wrong" path)

There will be plenty of time to discuss your own questions, concerns, and ideas.

Reducing your level of preprofessional stress can lead to making better personal, academic, and career decisions, and can also help you more fully enjoy your undergraduate experience. Come join us. HPPLC and CAPS invite all students and alumni pursuing admission to any type of competitive admission health program to attend Managing The Stress Of Being A Prehealth Student, now in its fourth year.
