Volunteer Opportunities from Middle Way House

Greetings Psychology and Neuroscience Majors,

Below please find two volunteer opportunities from Middle Way House available to all majors. The organization serves children between the ages of 3-19 years old who have come from domestic violence, homeless, and poverty situations:

Volunteer Opportunity #1
CLLC – L100 (#20458) Collins Seminar, Spring Break for Kids (1 credit hour)

There are still 10 spots left in a 1 credit hour service learning course for Spring 2015, CLLC – L100, which aims to provide children affiliated with Middle Way House and The Rise with a Spring Break Camp. The class meets Feb 18^th, Feb 25^th, March 4th,   March 11^th, and March 25^th from 6pm-8:30pm and the week of Spring Break from 8:30am-6 p.m. During the first four classes, students will get a foundation on the effects of domestic violence, child abuse, and poverty on children. They will learn about Middle Way House and about what they will doing with the children over spring break. During spring break, students will spend Mon-Fri 8:30-5pm with the children. Students and children will go to the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis, the Exotic Feline Rescue Center, The Indianapolis Zoo, and Wonder Lab.  Students and children will also go to a Chemistry Magic show, and have live animals brought in by the Humane Society for some educational programs and two animal rescue programs. It is a really fun week that allows students to make a difference in a child’s life over Spring Break.

Volunteer Opportunity #2
Tutoring

Middle Way House tutors children between the ages of 4-18 (most are between 4-12) with their homework. They do tutoring Mon-Friday from 5:45-7 p.m. Help is needed with tutoring children in all grades. Help is also needed in developing assignments for children to do when they do not have homework that would increase their literacy and math levels. The organization is currently tutoring about 30 children a day and need more volunteers, particularly on Fridays.

MSSW - Couple and Family Therapy Open House Dec. 5, 2014

Are you interested in learning more about the field of marriage and family therapy?

If so, the University of Louisville Masters in Social Work program with a Specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy now known as Couple and Family Therapy, might be what you are looking for in a Graduate Education.  

Please join us for a CFT Specialization Open House on Friday, December 5^th from 4:30-6:00 at Burhans Hall on Shelby Campus.

At the Open House you will have an opportunity to meet CFT faculty, learn about the program and practicum, and ask questions in an informal setting. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided.

Prior attendance at one of the MSSW Prospective Student Sessions would be helpful but is not required (see below). We will only be discussing the MSSW-CFT specialization.  

The Kent School’s MSSW-CFT program prepares students through course work and practicum hours and supervision to become Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists in addition to being able to sit for licensure as Clinical Social Workers.

SEEKING STUDENTS FOR PHD IN INQUIRY METHODOLOGY

The Inquiry Methodology doctoral program, housed in the Indiana University School of Education, now offers a PhD in Inquiry Methodology (also referred to as Research Methodology) with three possible areas of focus.

Doctoral students in Inquiry Methodology receive rigorous training in one of three research methodology areas: qualitative inquiry, quantitative inquiry, or an integrated track. Graduates of research methodology programs are in high demand and enjoy a number of job opportunities, including academia, research institutes, government, and the commercial sector.

Possible areas of focus include educational and social science statistics, psychometrics, evaluation, ethnography, discourse analysis and so forth. In a climate that heavily emphasizes scientifically based research supported by sound methods, Inquiry Methodology students will be well positioned to secure research positions in any number of areas such as education, psychology or other social sciences, both applied and theoretical.

This week is National Career Development Week! Tomorrow, Thursday, November 13th from 1-4PM, Mo Issa from the Career Development Center will have a booth in the Jordan Hall Atrium where students can have their resumes reviewed, schedule appointments for resume/cover letter critiques, answer career related trivia questions (and win candy), and ask questions and learn about the CDC/ASCS services. We encourage you to take advantage of this valuable professional development opportunity!

Counseling Psychology Student Organization's mentoring program

This semester, the Counseling Psychology Student Organization (CPSO) is offering a mentoring program for prospective students who may be interested in applying for the counseling/counselor education master's program and/or the counseling psychology doctoral program through the School of Education at IUB. Having been through the application process themselves, the current graduate students in the organization understand how it can be stressful along the way. They hope that by reaching out and offering support to prospective students, it will make the process less tedious and more enjoyable.
