Dr. Rebecca Knickmeyer, University of North Carolina will give a talk this Friday, May 1 on “Sex on the Brain: Gonadal Steroids and Genetic Factors in Human Neurodevelopment” (please see abstract below). The seminar will be held in the Student Building room 150 at 2:00PM. This seminar is part of the Spring 2009 IU Behavior Colloquia, sponsored by CISAB and hosted by Michael Muehlenbein, Dept. of Antrhopology. ALL interested are welcome to attend!
SCHEDULE A MEETING WITH DR. KNICKMEYER:
We are preparing Rebecca’s itinerary for meetings with individuals or groups on Thursday, April 30 in the afternoon and Friday, May 1 from 9am to Noon. If you are interested in scheduling a meeting with Rebecca please send the day and time(s) you are available. Thank you!
INFO ON DR. KNICKMEYER:
B.A., Goucher College
Ph.D., University of Cambridge
Postdoctoral Training: The Neurodevelopmental Disorders Research Center and Department of Psychiatry, UNC-Chapel Hill
Web site: http://www.med.unc.edu/psych/directories/faculty/rebecca-knickmeyer-ph-d/
Dr. Knickmeyer's research is focused on understanding the mechanisms which modulate the differential vulnerability to and expression of neurodevelopmental disorders in each sex, with a particular focus on hormonal and genetic factors. She is currently using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to explore the sexual differentiation of the brain in human children and in non-human primates. She is also studying early brain development in children with sex chromosome abnormalities, such as Turner Syndrome, and the effects of prenatal exposure to antidepressant medications on early brain development.
ABSTRACT: Relative risk levels for many psychiatric disorders are dramatically different in males and females. Early-onset neurodevelopmental disorders occur significantly more often in males then females, including autism, ADHD, and early onset persistent antisocial behavior. Other conditions, such as schizophrenia, occur at similar rates in males and females, but the sexes differ in age of onset, symptomatology and course of disease. It has been hypothesized that the prevalence and expression of these disorders is related to sex differences in brain development and that sex chromosome effects and early exposure to gonadal hormones (especially androgens and estrogens) are strong candidates for a causal role. The speaker will discuss strategies for studying sex hormone and sex chromosome effects in human populations. She will characterize sex-differences in brain morphology during infancy and childhood, review evidence linking variation in prenatal testosterone exposure to social and communicative development and present recent data on whether early testosterone exposure and sex chromosome abnormalities predict variation in neonatal brain morphology.

Paid IRS Internships: Summer '09
Marsha Franklin and Joelene Bergonzi, Dept of Political Science Woodburn Hall 210,855-6308, are the IUB campus liaisons, with whom students would speak about earning credit for this internship, or others with the Washington Center.
The Washington Center is seeking applicants for internship opportunities with the Internal Revenue Service in Florence, Kentucky for summer 2009. An internship with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) would provide students with substantial financial assistance as well as housing in Florence, KY for the duration of the internship. For priority consideration at the IRS, students need to submit materials by Wednesday April 22, 2009. After that date, applicants will be considered on a space-available basis.
This program gives interns the opportunity to develop skills, make professional contacts, build their resumes and explore future career opportunities within the IRS. Students will need to commit to 10-weeks at the agency, beginning in late May.
With the IRS, students are given a lot of leverage to make their own projects and pursue their own interests. Work will be substantive in nature; the exact tasks will vary by major and interest area.
Applicants must:
* be U.S. citizens.
* have a 3.5 GPA or above.
* be enrolled as a junior or senior undergraduate student in fall 2009.
Desired Majors: Humanities, History, Political Science, Communications, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, Liberal Arts, and other related majors.
Compensation: Interns will receive financial assistance covering the cost of housing and will also be awarded a bimonthly stipend. Those who do not need housing in Florence will have their stipends adjusted accordingly.
Application Procedures: Send a resume, a short statement of interest and an unofficial transcript to The Washington Center's Office of Federal Relations at federalrelations@twc.edu by Wednesday April 22.
With any questions about the IRS opportunities available through The Washington Center, please contact Danielle Gaquin at danielle.gaquin@twc.edu or (202)238-7906. We thank you for sharing this opportunity with eligible students!

"Axon-glia interactions and mouse models of human myelin disease"
Wednesday, April 22, 2009 4:00 p.m.
Psychological & Brain Sciences Building Room PY101 IUB Hosted by Cary Lai
Abstract:
The long-term integrity of axons is a bottleneck for the function of the nervous system, as illustrated by many several neurodegenerative diseases. Oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells myelinate long axons for rapid impulse conduction, but other important functions of these axon-associated glial cells exist that remain poorly understood. We have identified genes expressed exclusively in mature oligodendrocytes, such as Plp1 and Cnp1, that are not essential for myelination, yet required the long-term survival of axons. The role of ensheathing glia in preserving axonal integrity also involves peroxisomes that are often localized at sites of axon-glial contact. Loss of peroxisomal functions in oligodendrocytes of conditional Pex5 mutants causes axon loss in the white matter and a strong inflammatory response, with the infiltration of B and activated CD8(+) T cells. The model is discussed that oligodendrocytes provide a neuroprotective function against both axonal degeneration and neuroinflammation, which is relevant for human neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis.

"Endocannabinoid signaling during brain development"
Wednesday, April 15, 2009
4:00 p.m.
Psychological & Brain Sciences Building Room PY101 IUB
Hosted by Ken Mackie
Abstract:
Endocannabinoids (eCB) function as retrograde messengers at both excitatory and inhibitory synapses, and control various forms of synaptic plasticity in the adult brain. The molecular machinery required for specific eCB functions during maintenance of synaptic homeostasis is becoming well established. However, eCB signaling plays surprisingly fundamental roles in controlling the acquisition of neuronal identity during CNS development. Recent work suggests that selective recruitment of regulatory signaling networks to CB1 cannabinoid receptors dictates neuronal state-change decisions. In addition, the spatial localization and temporal precision of eCB action emerges as a novel organizer in developing neuronal networks. At the moment, we are far from understanding the molecular logic and chronodynamics of how eCB signaling networks specify in the embryonic brain, and how their specific neurodevelopmental functions relate to and define their retrograde control of neurotransmitter release at mature synapses. Important open questions include: where and when eCBs are produced in the developing brain; the molecular identity of eCBs and whether they represent 'active' signals; whether respective receptors and intracellular signal transduction cascades differ from those in the postnatal brain; how eCB signaling integrates with other regulatory systems; and how the relative power of this newly-emerging signaling entity contributes to define neurodevelopmental processes. In this talk, I will summarize contemporary discoveries establishing eCB-driven cellular identification events in the developing cerebrum, and define a unifying concept of how eCB signaling provides positional signals for excitatory and inhibitory afferents along the dendritic tree of cortical neurons, thus shaping the complexity of cortical connectivity.

INTERESTED IN GRADUATE SCHOOL AND A CAREER IN PUBLIC SERVICE?
The IU spring semester deadline for the 2010 Truman Scholarship
competition is FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2009.
An INFORMATION SESSION for prospective undergraduate applicants,
especially for those planning to seek nomination for the coming year's
competition, will be conducted on Tuesday, April 14, 2009,
3:00-4 p.m. in the Great Room of the Hutton Honors College, 811 E.
Seventh Street (corner of 7th and Woodlawn).
Next year, The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation is expected to
award 70-75 merit-based scholarships to students across the nation who
will be ?juniors? in 2009-10 and who plan to attend graduate or
professional school in preparation for careers in government or public
service. (See Eligibility section below for the Truman Foundation?s
definition of ?juniors.?) Each scholarship is worth $30,000 and the
Foundation assists Truman Scholars ?with career counseling, internship
placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development.?
To compete for the award, students must be nominated by their
undergraduate institutions. The IU Truman Selection/Nomination
Committee has set Friday, April 24, 2009, as the campus deadline for
current sophomores who wish to be considered for the 2010 competition.
(Interested juniors should check the eligibility requirements noted
below to determine whether or not they are also eligible for
consideration this spring.) In the past, Truman scholars have come
from such diverse fields as history, political science, international
relations, journalism, economics, education, law, public
administration, nonprofit management, physical and social sciences,
and technology policy. Truman Scholars are eligible to receive up to
$15,000 for the first year of graduate study and $15,000 for the final
year of graduate study.
The Truman Scholarship seeks to promote public service, which the
foundation defines ?as employment in government at any level,
uniformed services, public-interest organizations, non-governmental
research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools,
and public-service oriented nonprofit organizations such as those
whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or
to protect the environment.? Scholars are required to work in public
service for three of the seven years following completion of a
graduate degree program funded by the Truman.
Eligibility: To be eligible for consideration for the Truman
Scholarship, a student must have a clear commitment to a career in
public service, be in the upper quarter of his or her class, be a U.S.
Citizen or National, and be nominated by his/her university.
The student must also be a ?junior-level student,? which for the 2010
competition, we anticipate being defined as a student who plans to
continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a
baccalaureate degree between December 2010 and August 2011, or
third-year student who expects to graduate during the 2009-10 academic
year. (Residents of Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American
Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are
eligible in their fourth year.) See http://www.truman.gov for
official eligibility criteria.
Nomination and Selection Standards: Because Truman Scholarship
attracts the interest of top candidates around the country, IU only
nominates students with outstanding credentials. The foundation
chooses scholars on the basis of their excellent academic performance
and communication skills, potential for leadership, extensive records
of public and community service, and commitment to careers in
government or elsewhere in public service. (See the Truman
Foundation?s definition of ?public service? above.) IU?s nominating
committee and the Truman Foundation selectors are looking for
candidates who show promise of making a difference in the world
through their public service.
IU Nomination Process: The IU committee will select up to four
nominees for the national 2010 Truman competition. To be considered by
the IU committee, IU students must submit a completed Truman
Scholarship application, including a 500-word policy proposal on a
significant issue related to the candidate?s intended area of public
service. Candidates must also include one of the three letters of
recommendation described in the Truman application material.
Application materials may be picked up or requested from Elaine Hehner
in the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh Street, Room 204,
Bloomington, IN 47405. For additional information on the scholarship
and guidance on the application, including the 500-word policy
proposal, see the Truman Web site: http//www.truman.gov. For
additional information on the scholarship and the IU nomination

Attention Graduating Seniors!
Graduating seniors and others are invited to a program that the IU Alumni Association (IUAA) sponsors as a part of Bloomington Commencement activities.
Baccalaureate, a traditional celebration of academic achievement held the day before Commencement at Indiana University's Bloomington campus, will be observed in an interfaith ceremony on Friday, May 8, at 5 p.m.
in the IU Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.
In 2002, a campus-wide committee restructured the traditional baccalaureate ceremony into an event that recognizes the many faith traditions that are represented on the IUB campus. This multiplicity is now the format of the event, which contains teachings and practices of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. The 50-minute celebration will feature prayers, readings, a brief message by Vice President Ed Marshall, and special music.
Baccalaureate Celebration 2008 was honored with the Bronze Award for Diversity Programs by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, District V (CASE V). This recognition illustrates the culture of mutual respect, acceptance, and diversity that the IUAA strives for in its programming. The committee is proud that our institutional peers saw the value of a diversity program such as this.

Pending budgetary approval, The Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) at the University of Pittsburgh will be hiring one full-time research assistant to start in the summer of 2009. The successful applicant will assist the Principal Investigators in carrying out several NIMH-funded longitudinal studies: one is a study of the precursors to depression in girls, another is a study examining postpartum adjustment among teenage mothers, and the third is a study of the effects of prenatal nutrition on stress reactivity during pregnancy.
