Undergraduate Research Opportunity

Below is an announcement regarding an opportunity for undergraduates to earn credit during the second summer session while also being part of a research team:

The 2015 Sociological Research Practicum (SRP) will explore Americans’ views regarding the family and higher education. A team of students trained by the Center for Survey Research conducted national phone interviews.  Among the topics to be covered in the interviews are: how Americans define “family”; views regarding cohabitation and same-sex relationships; views regarding children’s personality and traits’ views regarding adoptive families, same-sex families, and interracial families; views on the “appropriate” role of fathers and mothers; attitudes regarding the division of labor in the home; relationships with grandparents and extended kin; views regarding same-sex marriage; views regarding the benefits and challenges of higher education, and views regarding the role that students, parents, and the government should assume in funding a college education.

Now that the interview component of the SRP is coming to a close, we are inviting students to earn college credit while being part of the transcription team during the second summer session.  Depending on the number of credit hours they are earning, SRP team members should expect to spend between 10 and 15 hours a week transcribing interviews. Interested students also will have opportunities to analyze some of the collected data (either in the summer or in the fall) and to present the results at a conference.

Undergraduates can choose to register for Sociology S492 (Undergraduate SRP), Sociology S494 (Internship), and Sociology S495 (Research and Readings in Sociology) and can earn up to 6 credit hours (although most will choose to earn 3 credit hours).  Students in the Hutton Honors College might be able to received honors course credit for participation.
