Exciting Summer
Field Placement
Opportunity in Vermont
Enjoy
an UNFORGETTABLE, life-changing summer!
What is Camp Akeela?
Camp Akeela is an overnight summer camp in Vermont for boys and girls ages 9 - 17.
Many of our campers have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or a non-verbal learning disability. Others are undiagnosed but are described as "quirky." All are very bright, charming and well- behaved boys and girls who struggle to connect with their peers. Akeela’s small, supportive community helps campers improve their social skills, make friends, gain self-confidence and have
fun!
Who should apply to Camp Akeela?
Our staff members are primarily college and graduate school students in the fields of psychology, education, special ed, PT, OT, SLP, social work, outdoor education, etc. They choose to join Akeela
because they are excited about living, playing, laughing, coaching, teaching and learning in our camp community.
Staff will not be providing “therapy” in the traditional sense, but will be a key part of a program that integrates a therapeutic approach to recreation and community living. Staff will have the opportunity to work first-hand with children and see the practical applications of their studies, while providing an incredible, life-changing camp experience.
Camp Akeela’s directors Debbie (PsyD in Clinical Psychology, Yeshiva University) and Eric Sasson (MEd, Harvard University), along with a key staff of experienced professionals, are at camp to mentor and support the staff.
